Commentary on Suzuki's Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom

Single six-panel screen; colors on gold-leaf paper. This is a masterpiece by Kiwako Suzuki, a female painter who has created many paintings depicting objects in nature that have been familiar to Japanese people since ancient times. Depicted with precise drawing techniques and unique sensitivity, the cherry blossoms are constructed in a bold yet precise style. Since cherry blossoms are a common subject for many Japanese painters, the painter needs todemonstrate particular skill and individuality. These blooming cherry blossoms—which can be depicted only by someone who, like Suzuki, has studied authentic Japanese painting by learning conservation techniques—are absolutely gorgeous and elegant.
